More than half of the United States has, to some degree or other, decriminalized or legalized marijuana. With the legalization of marijuana in various states, ordering weed online has become very easy. In these times, the celebrity-worshiping voting public did not get there without some familiar and influential faces. Notable film and music personalities have always been outspoken about their support, but now, even religious icons and travel writers are doing their bit to spread to marijuana advocacy.
Without further ado, here are 10 famous figures influencing public opinion of marijuana legalization:
1. Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg has been public about his love for weed for decades already. The hip-hop icon from the West Coast has been rolling joints with abandon since before California even thought of legalizing medical use. He famously designed weed-leaf socks, hot-boxed the White House, and even invested in a medical marijuana delivery service in Los Angeles.
Self-described bad girl, Ri-Ri is very probably the loudest female advocate of cannabis. Not only does she support it publically, she lights up without worry too. Although her involvement in normalizing weed use has no political motivations, she is nonetheless famous enough to open the minds of billions, particularly when her Instagram posts show 17.2 million followers enormous joints under her #legalizeit hashtag.
3. Susan Sarandon
Sarandon openly confesses to being high at every awards ceremony that she ever attends. As one of Hollywood’s leading award-winning female actors, this makes her their biggest goofball. Kathy Bates, a long-time close friend, claims that Sarandon smokes more weed than even Matthew McConaughey does, who is yet another noted pothead. Sarandon is a Marijuana Policy Project advisory board member.
4. Bill Maher
HBO’s Real Time host and comedian have been a consistent defender of the right to use marijuana since 2003 already, and he does so live on his show. Not only do four million viewers listen to him call out the hypocrisy of politicians on the cannabis issue every week, he is also a politically active advocate of legalization. Like Sarandon, Maher is also a member of the Marijuana Policy Project’s advisory board.
5. Rick Steves
Well known travel writer and host of Rick Steves’ Europe, a popular television show, is a direct advocate of cannabis legalization. Steves sits on the NORML advisory board as a member, and he actively speaks at events around the country in favor of making marijuana legal nationwide. He even conducted a three-part interview for hit show StT.
6. Whoopi Goldberg
Co-host of The View, a daytime talk show, and former comedian, Whoopi Goldberg is a huge defender of marijuana legalization. Nearly three million viewers tune in every week to listen to her discuss a variety of world issues, and she uses the opportunity freely to inform them of the benefits of medical cannabis in pediatrics, geriatrics, and everything between.
7. Jack Black
The public is well aware of the comedic actor’s penchant for weed. Jack Black does not hide it from anyone and, in fact, you can watch him getting high on Doug Benson’s popular Internet talk show, Getting Doug with High. When he is not in front of a camera getting as stoned as he possibly can, he is advocating for legalization as a Marijuana Policy Project advisory board member.
8. Melissa Etheridge
Singer and songwriter, Melissa Etheridge, is very outspoken about her support for cannabis legalization. She believes wholeheartedly that marijuana saved her during the worst moments of her fight against breast cancer. She has plans to release a cannabis-infused wine under her own brand, and the multi-platinum artist advocates for use on public platforms wherever possible, most notably CNN.
9. Woody Harrelson
Woody Harrelson has been championing weed for as long as any of his fans can remember. His latest work in True Detective, an HBO crime drama, has thrown his advocacy back into the spotlight. His role in the show led to him playing the most comedic stoner yet in an unforgettable Saturday Night Live sketch, which saw him hilariously mocking New York’s recent decriminalized cannabis laws.
10. The Dalai Lama
Although His Holiness does not use marijuana personally for religious reasons, the world religious leader believes strongly that people should have the choice. The Dalai Lama is open to supporting marijuana use for medical purposes, and his influence is widespread worldwide. Revered by Buddhists, who account for seven percent of the globe’s population, he also has millions of non-Buddhist fans.
